UK Metals Council - Workstream Activity

07 Oct 2016

To bring you up to date:

  • The BSSA is a member of the Metals Forum, which is made up of 11 metals related trade associations.
  • From December 2016, Paul Barker, Managing Director of the BSSA will take up the role of Chairman, Metals Forum.
  • It is our involvement with Metals Forum which allows the BSSA to work with UK Government departments on issues such as industrial strategy, legislation and infrastructure projects.
  • The Metals Forum trade associations and individuals from their member companies together created “Vision 2030 – The UK Metals Industry’s New Strategic Approach” in conjunction with the Department for Business Innovation and Skills.
  • The objectives set out in the strategy will be delivered by the newly formed UK Metals Council (formed primarily from metals industry company representatives and funded by Metals Forum members).
  • The UK Government now has a Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy  (BEIS) Their strategy will be formed over time with the involvement of the UK Metals Council and other industrial sector councils such as Automotive, Construction, Oil & Gas, Aerospace.
  • The work of the UK Metals Council will fall into 5 principal work-streams and each of them will all need the help and support of member companies in order to progress.
  • The five principal work-streams are:
    • Innovation & R&D
    • Skills & Training
    • Circular Economy & Sustainability
    • Supply Chain
    • Communications
** We are now specifically seeking nominations for the Skills & Training Work-stream from individuals within member companies who feel they can contribute to this important piece of work. However, if you wish to propose involvement in any of the work-streams above, these will also be considered.  In the first instance, those interested should contact Paul Barker on 0114 292 2638 or email

In the coming weeks, we will forward requests for comment / feedback on a number of topics directly to members. Your contributions will be very much appreciated as we help to form the new Government’s Industrial Strategy and seek to deliver the necessary changes in our sector.
