Aperam - Wrap House

17 Jun 2015

Wrap house is a large 1960s house in Godalming, Surrey which Edgley Design was commissioned to ‘upcycle’ and extend. The envelope was reinsulated and its strong external forms re-articulated with reflective stainless steel cladding and contrasting dark zinc fascias. The main forms were clad with UGINOX Mat stainless steel from Aperam, creating a dynamic façade through the abstracted, constantly changing reflections of the rural landscape and sky. The material has exceptional smoothness and provides a shimmering envelope. A standard milled surface was used but greater reflectivity can be achieved by bright annealing and full mirror polishing.

In keeping with the sustainable ethos of the project, stainless steel was specified for its durability and recyclability as its recovery rate is close to 100%. Wrap House demonstrates a prototypical solution to the renewal of similar housing stock in the UK for which there is tendency towards demolition. The sensitive redesign has made a dramatic transformation in terms of aesthetics and energy efficiency with minimal environmental impact. The result is a unique, functional building in tune with its landscape. It was awarded best ‘House over 300k’ at the AJ Retrofit Awards.
