Contact BSSA

UK Government Industrial Strategy

29 Apr 2014

There has been a long-standing relationship between Metals Forum (of which the BSSA is a member) and “BIS”, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills headed up by the Rt Hon Michael Fallon. A theme of the contact to date has been to impress upon Government the importance of the metals sector to the long term success of the “Strategic Sectors” for which the Government has an established strategy – Aerospace, Oil & Gas, Chemicals, Automotive, Power Generation, Construction, Advanced Manufacturing amongst others. Without a strong and healthy UK metals sector and supply chain, these end user sectors could not flourish.

In recent contacts, Mr Fallon accepted that an initial scoping study of the metals sector would be beneficial, exploring various key themes such as:

•    Supply Chain
•    Manufacturing Technology
•    Innovation
•    R&D
•    Skills
•    Product Quality

The study would consider key issues, priorities and areas where work is required to build more successful supply chains for the key end user sectors.

Discussions took place during March with a number of sector leaders (manufacturers, raw material suppliers, service centres / distributors / fabricators / end users) and a report has been compiled to allow MF and BIS to jointly consider if there is an appetite for further study / working groups aimed at building a Government supported strategy for the metals sector.

We shall keep you posted on how things move forward.
