Stainless Steel - 100 Not Out!100 years of Stainless Steel

2013 marks 100 years since stainless steel was discovered in Sheffield. The BSSA have selected 50 applications and features that demonstrate how stainless steel has influenced our lives so far.

Cement Mixer

Stainless steel wire is available in various forms – coils, spools, lengths and semi-finished product.

One demanding medical application for profiled wire is the Summit Medical HiVac™  Syringe containing a stainless steel spindle manufactured by Hempel Wire. The syringe is designed to mix bone cement under vacuum conditions for use in orthopaedic reconstruction. Type 304L wire rod is cold drawn, annealed, cold rolled, twisted and then cut to length. The spindle design enables the device to consistently mix the cement without any user variability and has been sold around the world.

For over 50 years, bone cements have been used to anchor artificial joints (hips, knees, shoulders, elbows) by filling the free space between the prosthesis and the bone, creating an elastic zone. This elastic zone helps to absorb the significant forces acting on the joint, whilst keeping the prosthesis reliably in place.

Corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning are key performance requirements for this precision equipment.
