Stainless Steel - 100 Not Out!100 years of Stainless Steel

2013 marks 100 years since stainless steel was discovered in Sheffield. The BSSA have selected 50 applications and features that demonstrate how stainless steel has influenced our lives so far.

Chips With Everything

Almost certainly, the most revolutionary development in the last 30 years is the advent of the PC (and Mac of course). 80% of homes now have a computer and most businesses could not work without one. For this application, stainless steel is “hidden”. It is not found in the PC itself. However, it plays a crucial part in the manufacture of the semiconductor (silicon chip) at the heart of every PC and mobile device.

Semiconductors are made under extremely stringent conditions to avoid contamination of the silicon chip. Once again, the corrosion resistance and hygienic properties of stainless steel meet the requirements.  Electropolished 316 (1.4401) provides the smooth inert surface required for this demanding application.
