Corrosion tables and diagrams (corrosion handbook)

How to link to the corrosion diagrams on the Outokumpu Stainless web site

The link connects to the online Outokumpu Stainless Corrosion Handbook
The corrosion tables show the anticipated resistance of a range of stainless steel grades to a wide range of chemicals (including most common acids). This can be used in the same way as the corrosion handbook. The chemical can be selected from an alphabetical index or by entering the chemical formula. The steel types are shown as Outukumpu grades and these can be viewed by highlighting the grade name shown. The '304' family of steels are shown as 'Standard Cr-Ni' and the '316' steels as 'Standard Cr-Ni-Mo'

Outokumpu Stainless do NOT make any warranties, expressed or implied, nor accept any liability for the performance of stainless steels in individual applications, based on the information published in their corrosion tables and iso-corrosion diagrams.

How to use and interpret the information

The tables give corrosion rates for ranges of combinations of temperature and weight % concentrations. It is assumed that the 'solvent' is normally water and the chemical under consideration is assumed be of 'chemical' purity .
The rates are summarized with indicators '0', '1' or '2'. These are explained by clicking the 'Additional information' title in the 'Table Key' window.

Mixtures of chemicals and the addition of impurities or environmental factors such as pH (acidity) and the presence of chlorides can affect the results.

The data assumes that the steels are in the annealed condition, with a wrought structure and have clean surfaces.

The data does not usually consider localised forms of corrosion, such as crevice, pitting or stress corrosion cracking.
These mechanisms can occur under certain conditions in addition to general corrosion and can result in unsatisfactory grade selections.

In cases of doubt the services of specialists should be used.
