Chemical compositions of stainless steels to BS 6323-8

Introduction

BS 6323 consisted of 8 parts. Only part 8 covered longitudinally welded stainless steel tubes for automobile, mechanical and general engineering purposes. This part of the standard was last published in 1982. Seamless stainless steel tubes were not covered by BS 6323.
BS 6323-8 was withdrawn in December 2005 and replaced by the newly published BSEN 10296-2:2005.
The tube designations used in BS6323-8 were related back to the obsolete BS 1449-2 sheet grades, from which the welded tubes would have been formed and welded. These have not been used in the new European Standard, but are shown in this article for historical interest. The designations used covered a range of as-welded, annealed and cold finished (CF) tubes. Only the basic 'LW' designations are shown here, as these are the same steel compositions for tubes that were in the as-welded, annealed or cold finished conditions. The mechanical properties did however vary for the different finishing methods.

As an alternative to scanning down the list try the 'find' facility on your keyboard, using the 'Ctrl' and 'F' keys together. Type in the term you are looking for in the dialog box that then appears.

The data given is not intended to replace that shown in individual standards to which reference should always be made.

Note
The equivalent steel (409S18) is a modification of 409S17 in BS 1449-2 so as not to be susceptible to the formation of martensite.
