Editorial: Stainless Steel Centenary
15 May 2012
The international stainless steel community is celebrating the first 100 years of stainless steel. The ISSF launched a travelling exhibition about stainless steel in Beijing (China) on 15 May 2012.
100 Years of Stainless Steel: Logo and Website
The global stainless steel community is marking a century since stainless steels were first created, patented and produced. Over that time, stainless steel has grown to be an integral part of our modern world. ISSF (International Stainless Steel Forum) has created a website and logo to celebrate a century of innovation.
The website: www.stainlesssteelcentenary.info is dedicated to the history of stainless steel and its innovative applications. As well as the list of celebratory events, this website features many interesting facts about stainless steel, stunning images of stainless steel applications from the past century, and a detailed history of this amazing material.

The Centenary Logo to celebrate the first 100 years of stainless steel has also been created by ISSF. Anyone in the stainless steel industry is welcome to use it and there is no charge but you will need to register with ISSF directly; just email Jo Claes (claes@issf.org).
BSSA and 100 Years of Stainless Steel
The centenary presents a great opportunity not just to remind people of the past contribution that stainless steel has made to all our lives but also its potential for use in new applications. The stainless industry worldwide will be using the centenary landmark to further promote the use of stainless steel and the centenary and the promotion of stainless steel will be an important focus of the activities of the BSSA during the next two years.
Harry Brearley Centenary Conference and Exhibition
The celebrations of the first 100 years will culminate in June 2013 with the anniversary of Harry Brearley’s own discovery in Sheffield. Whilst several countries can lay claim to being the first, undoubtedly Harry Brearley was one of the pioneers who quickly saw its potential. The BSSA is collaborating with the Sheffield Metallurgical and Engineering Association to organise a major conference and exhibition in Sheffield during the 11th-13th June 2013. Mored details will be announced soon but if you want more information please contact the BSSA at enquiry@bssa.org.uk or call 0114 267 1260.
100 Years of Stainless Steel: Centenary Exhibition...Can you help?
Do you have objects, promotional material, catalogues etc. that can be loaned to Sheffield Museums for an exhibition to mark the centenary of stainless steel? As part of the stainless steel centenary celebrations being planned for 2013, Museums Sheffield are gathering for stainless steel artefacts for a centenary exhibition.
They are looking to borrow or acquire items such as:
- Domestic objects, from kitchenware to furniture
- Practical objects, from medical equipment to tools
- Art & design objects, from sculpture to architecture
For all the themes, the Museums are interested in objects, promotional material, catalogues, design drawings, film & video and photographs. These can be from any period since 1913 and can relate to Sheffield, the UK and across the world.
