Editorial: Stainless Steel Centenary

The global stainless steel community is marking 100 years since stainless steels were first created, patented and produced. Since then, stainless steel has grown to be an integral part of our modern world. The UK and Sheffield have played a fundamental role in this development as it was in Sheffield where Harry Brearley first discovered stainless steel in 1913 .
The stainless steel industry and the City of Sheffield are celebrating Harry Brearley's discovery with a series of events and activities:

The Development and Application of Stainless Steels
University of Sheffield, 11-13 June 2013
The BSSA and the Sheffield Metallurgical and Engineering Association are hosting a major conference and exhibition in Sheffield, which will focus on the future for stainless steel. There are 6 sessions over two days which will highlight the major achievements that stainless steel has made so far and look foward to what the future might hold.
The conference programme also includes:
Celebrity Lecture - evening of Tuesday 11 June,
Presented by Mika Seitovirta, CEO Outokumpu Group in Firth Hall, University of Sheffield
Centenary Dinner - evening of Wednesday 12 June, hosted by the Master Cutler at The Cutlers' Hall, Sheffield
Speakers include The Deputy Prime Minister, The Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP, and John Cridland, Director-general of the Condederation of British Industry

STAINLESS STEEL - 100 NOT OUT!
2013 marks 100 years since stainless steel was first discovered in Sheffield. The BSSA has selected 50 applications that demonstrate how stainless steel has influenced our lives so far. Each week throughout the year one of the examples will be emailed out.
The first example entitled, Stainless Steel Makes the Cut, featured cutlery, which was one of the first uses of stainless steel. Click here if you are interested in seeing the featured examples or learning more about our campaign.
The City of Sheffield
2013 marks 100 years since Stainless Steel was discovered by Harry Brearley, in Sheffield. This development not only revolutionized the modern world, but shaped Sheffield into the city as we know it today. As a result, Sheffield is to host a year long celebratory events programme to ensure that this historic landmark is commemorated in style and reaffirm the legacy of innovation which still exists in the city today.

International Stainless Steel Forum
The stainless steel centenary is being celebrated worldwide and the International Stainless Steel Forum has created a website to celebrate a century of innovation.
www.stainlesssteelcentenary.info is dedicated to the history of stainless steel and its innovative applications. As well as the list of celebratory events, the website features many interesting facts about stainless steel, stunning images of stainless steel applications from the past century and a detailed history of this amazing material.
The Centenary Logo to celebrate the first 100 years of stainless steel has also been created by ISSF. Anyone in the stainless steel industry is welcome to use it and there is no charge but you will need to register with ISSF directly; just email Jo Claes (claes@issf.org).
