WEC Group Supply OLE Structures for 100m pounds West Midlands Electrification Project

15 May 2017

WEC Group Ltd, one of the largest engineering and fabrication companies in the UK, has manufactured a range of Overhead Line Electrification (OLE) structures for Network Rail/ABC’s £100m Walsall to Rugeley Trent Valley railway electrification project.

As part of the scheme, which runs for 15 miles, the Group fabricated a range of steel Single Track Cantilevers, Two Track Cantilevers, Portals and Anchor Portals in-house as well as four angle fabricated TTC bridges.

Electrification work on the West Midlands track began in 2013 and is expected to be completed in time for the first electric trains to run in May 2018, with a fully electric half hourly service by December 2018, reducing round trip journey times by 15 minutes and addressing overcrowding by introducing more trains.

David Taylor, UK Sales at WEC Fabrication, said: “It has been a pleasure dealing with staff at all levels within the ABC organisation, showing professionalism and a desire to succeed.

“Having demonstrated our total capacity and capability within WEC Group, ensuring competitive and economical manufacture for the project, we look forward to assisting with any future project with ABC or other Network Rail projects.”

WEC Group is heavily involved with rail electrification contracts and is a leading manufacturer of overhead steel poles for light rail transit systems and overhead line electrification. Recent projects include the Manchester Metrolink Light Rail project, Sheffield Tram Lines and LRT projects in Hong Kong and Istanbul.

As an approved aluminium welding supplier to Bombardier Transportation and accredited to EN 15085-2, BS EN 1090 and RISQS, the Group also specialise in the manufacture of undercarriage and interior parts including electrical enclosures, bolsters, body end cubicles, underframes, side bodies and more.

In addition, WEC provides design, fabrication and installation services to the rail industry for products including signal structures, gantries, bridges and CCTV products.

MTL Advanced, the Group’s Rotherham-based division, has recently achieved BS EN 3834-2 accreditation for passenger rail and freight wagons and supplies Category 1 safety critical parts such as cab & bogie structures, body shell components, bolsters and fuel tanks.

As a leading subcontract supplier of laser cut parts, sheet metal components and fabricated assemblies for the rail industry, Coventry-based HTA Group also manufacture a range of parts including interiors, HVAC, chassis components and undercarriage framework to name but a few.
