Sherburn Metalwork Invests in state-of-the-art Shot Blasting Facility

02 Mar 2017

Sherburn Metalwork Ltd, part of engineering and fabrication company WEC Group Ltd, has invested in a brand new state-of-the-art shot blasting facility to cater for its ongoing expansion.

Complementing the division’s existing wet painting facility, the £200,000 Wheelabrator air blast room has the capability shot blast components up to 15m long x 4.7m wide x 4m high, which is ideal for large scale components.

Yorkshire-based Sherburn Metalwork predominantly provides fabrication, sheet metalwork and robotic welding services to the automotive industry. This includes the manufacture of bus frames and chassis to parts for various trailer and body work manufacturers, including box vans and refrigerated trucks.

Bringing the shot blasting process in-house will significantly improve lead times for customers. It will also enable the company to pursue new business opportunities in a range of other industries.

Bryan Bentley, Sherburn Metalwork’s General Manager, said: “The new facility means we can now blast parts in-house before beginning the wet painting or powder coating process, which we also offer at WEC Group’s Darwen HQ.

“Our one-stop-shop manufacturing service is something many companies don’t offer, so this new investment will improve turnaround times for customers.”

Sherburn Metalwork’s in-house wet paint booth is 16m long x 6m wide x 4.5m high. For curing purposes, it can reach temperatures up to 85 degrees and uses an airless spray system which can apply any specification coating that the customer requires.

WEC Powder Coating also has the capability to powder coat components up to 1.5m high x 3m long x 800mm wide. Using the latest automation technology, this is highly competitive for volume orders and large batch quantities.

The Group has made over £11m of investment throughout the company over the past 18 months. This includes investments in state-of-the-art capital equipment such as a fully automated six metre bed laser cutting machine, CNC machining and waterjet cutting technology.
