WEC Group achieves AS 9100 Rev C Certification for Machining

29 Jul 2016

WEC Group, one of the largest engineering and fabrication companies in the UK, has achieved the prestigious AS 9100 Rev C certification for its specialist machining division.

WEC Machining is the third division of the Group to receive the internationally recognised quality management system standard as the company strives to build its order book in the aviation, space and defence industries.

In addition to being accredited for laser and waterjet cutting, the company’s certification for machining will open up valuable new opportunities as major aerospace manufacturers and suppliers worldwide require compliance and/or registration to AS 9100 as a condition of doing business with them.

Stephen Fitzpatrick, CEO of WEC Machining, said: "Receiving the AS9100 accreditation at WEC Machining has been a real team effort involving a lot of people.

"We have identified a number of key areas as part of an ambitious growth strategy. We see aerospace as a sector where we can make great strides, and we are actively working to ensure that happens."

The certification is a result of stringent process and quality measures assessed by BSI and is in addition to the existing ISO 9001:2008 accreditation.

Mihaela Mladin, WEC Group Quality Manager said: “All the people involved were 100% committed to achieving the accreditation in such a short space of time, with all changes to the system done to an extremely high standard.

“The next step will be to gather all the team and monitor projects from start to finish with complete involvement from Quality to ensure customer satisfaction is achieved.”

WEC Group has invested heavily in its CNC machining, laser and waterjet cutting operations over the past 12 months as part of its ongoing expansion plan. This includes investments in state-of-the-art equipment such as a fully automated laser cutting machine based at MTL Advanced in Rotherham.

This follows £3m of investments to relocate WEC Machining to a purpose built 33,000 sq. ft. production facility in Blackburn, Lancashire with room for expansion.

Since joining forces with HTA Group and Submarine Manufacturing & Products earlier this year, the company has a projected £75 million turnover for 2016 and has raised staff from 640 to almost 800.
