Individuals from metals companies across the UK have been working hard alongside Metals Forum (of which the BSSA is a member) and the Department for Business Innovations and Skills on developing an Industrial Strategy for the Metals Sector. They formed work-stream teams covering the following key areas:

  • Education Training & Skills
  • Supply Chain Integration & Partnerships
  • Innovation & R&D
  • Sustainability
  • Communications and Promotion

The Public Report is now finished and is a much shorter document capable of being used to market the strategy to key audiences. It crystallises the actions, targets, recommendations and commitments from the Foundation Report. We are now moving into the delivery phase of our work and this starts with the formation of a UK Metals Council headed by senior personnel from key Metals Sector businesses.

The finalised document was officially launched in October at the BIS Conference Centre in London, hosted by the Rt Hon Anna Soubry, MP, Minister of State for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Formation of the UK Metals Council

The Council consists of a Chairman and two Vice Chairmen, with each heading up one of two teams:

1. Supply Chain

and

2. Productivity, Sustainability and Growth (featuring the following workstreams)

a) Skills and Training

b) Circular Economy

c) Innovation and R+D

d) Communication and Promotion

Individual workstreams, supported with secretariat services from the Metals Forum trade associations, will meet as they consider appropriate in order to progress their key issues. The Chairman of Metals Forum will also sit on the Council, representing the many trade associations responsible for initiating the development of the Industrial Strategy for the Metals Industry.
