Noise at Work

10 Apr 2015

Following a request from one of our members, we have established that up to date resources covering the Noise at Work Act 2005 can be found at the following address:

http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg362.pdf

There are also additional relevant resources at: http://www.hse.gov.uk/noise/publications.htm

Testing can be quite costly so following some of the simple steps in the guidance can negate the need for detailed testing, and the simple test of whether you can hold a conversation stood 6’ apart is a good benchmark as to whether you have a problem.  A simple assessment, without the need for specialist advice is described in the literature. It is also worth bearing in mind that the manufacturers of machines should be able to specify the noise output. These figures are almost always the lowest possible level, and are rarely achievable on site, but they can be used to first select lower noise output equipment.

It would be helpful to hear from anyone who has had a good (and good value experience) with a testing consultant.

Some of the construction noise advice might be relevant to certain members:  http://www.hse.gov.uk/construction/healthrisks/physical-ill-health-risks/noise.htm
