Government Launch Long-Term Review of Business Rates

16 Mar 2015

The Chief Secretary to the Treasury has today launched the government’s long-term review of business rates, which was announced at Autumn Statement 2014.  The government has set out its terms of reference for the review and published a discussion paper online here:

The government decided to conduct this review because it wants to consider, with businesses and their representatives, the full range of options for reform to business rates. While there is agreement among many that the system needs to change, there is no clear consensus on what that reform should look like.  The scope of the review is therefore very broad and covers many of the issues we have previously discussed, including: the economic responsiveness of business rates; the treatment of different types of property in the system; the role that the business rates system plays in incentivising economic growth; and the structure and design of existing reliefs.   This review is an opportunity to consider these and other issues, informed by analysis and evidence, and we would welcome your contributions by 12 June 2015 to businessrates.review@hmtreasury.gsi.gov.uk
