2015 Metals Industry Apprentice of the Year Competition

03 Dec 2014

2015 Metals Industry Apprentice of the Year Competition

This competition is sponsored by The Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers alias Wire Workers.  There are two awards, each worth over £1,200 (as well as runner-up prizes), which are open to current or recently completed apprentices working in metals industry companies.  Any apprentice working in a business which falls within the scope of Metals Forum trade associations is eligible.

These are the only awards specifically for metals industry apprentices, and they offer a major incentive for apprentices as well as excellent publicity opportunities for the Award Winners’ companies. If you have apprentices, please do encourage them to apply.

The two awards are:

  • Career Development Award: designed to encourage and reward exceptional personal development and commitment to career progression.
  • Craft Skills Award: designed to encourage and reward the achievement of high level, practical, ‘hands-on', engineering, metallurgy or manufacturing skills.

The judges will be looking for apprentices who have made exceptional progress in developing their knowledge, skills and career in the metals industry; who have made outstanding contribution to their company; and who can demonstrate the greatest development during their apprenticeship.  So evidence of “distance travelled”, in terms of individual achievement, together with commitment and contribution to the company, will be as important as advanced qualifications or skills.   Recent winners/runners-up have come from a wide range of companies, including Sheffield Forgemasters, Crown Aerosols, Bridon, Furniss & White, Tata Steel, Crown Bevcan and South Durham Structures

The closing date for applications is Friday 6 March 2015.  Apprentices should submit their application form with a letter of support from the company.  Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in Sheffield, during March/early April. The two winners will then be invited to receive their award at the Court Dinner of Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers alias Wire Workers, at the Painters' Hall in London, on 14 May 2015, and a Director of their company will be invited to accompany them.
